Aaron Carter's ex-fiancee says son is 'best boy' and admits to taking DNA test to prove paternity

Aaron Carter's ex-fiancée, Melanie Martin, is setting the record straight.

Martin, who dated Carter on and off from 2020 to 2022, confirmed to PEOPLE this week that she took a DNA test to prove that Carter is the father of their 3-year-old son, Prince.

She told TMZ, which first reported the news, that this proves "beyond a shadow of a doubt" that Carter is Prince's father, and that this comes after hearing so many "unfounded" rumors and accusations over the years.

"We are doing great," Martin told PEOPLE in an exclusive statement. "He's almost 3." [We are] so lucky to have each other. He's the best boy and so smart." When Martin announced the expected news on Instagram Live, Carter told PEOPLE at the time that it was exactly "what we both wanted." "I'm just focused on the future and being a father," he told PEOPLE. "I'm focused, and my music career is going really well, and I'm touring, and I have my own clothing line, and everything I'm doing is not necessarily just music. The artist, who is the younger brother of Backstreet Boys singer Nick Carter, expressed similar sentiments after Carter and Melanie announced their breakup a week after Prince's birth, vowing that "Prince will be successful. What we prioritize during this difficult time. "

The parents reunited in December 2021, then separated again in February 2022.

Being a father was also something Carter had been thinking about since he was a young child.

In a February 2018 interview with PEOPLE, he said he looked forward to being a "good father" one day.

"I want lots of kids, lots of stability, lots of happiness and laughter and learning and fun. I'll be OK," he said.
